Google AI Mode Ads Land in the UK: What Shopify Brands Need to Do Now

Google is bringing ads to AI Mode in the UK this quarter. What it means for Shopify D2C and B2B brands, and how to get your store and feed ready.

AI search is moving faster than any channel we've seen, and October brought four of its biggest shifts yet. Ads are coming to Google's AI Mode in the UK, product discovery is happening inside Google rather than on your store, and Google itself has shown how much money is riding on it.

If you run a Shopify brand doing £3m to £12m and beyond, this is a window: the brands that prepare now will own the space while competitors are still reading about it.

The month at a glance

  • UK ads in AI Mode this quarter. Google plans a Q4 2026 UK launch. No exact date yet.
  • Ads that follow the chat. In the US, ads now appear on follow-up questions as shoppers refine what they want.
  • Shoppers compare before they click. In one US study, 57% of product links in AI Mode answers went to Google Shopping.
  • It runs on what you already have. Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible automatically.
  • Your Shopify data decides who shows up. Feed quality, product attributes and tracking are now competitive advantages.
Ads arrive in AI Mode, and follow the conversation
The UK Opportunity: £111.9bn in-store retail market

AI Mode is Google's conversational search. Shoppers don't type "travel bag" any more; they ask for a water-resistant carry-on that fits under a plane seat for a weekend away, then follow up about hidden pockets and TSA locks.

Google now shows ads in that flow. On 28 October it expanded AI Mode ads to ten more countries, confirmed the UK for Q4 2026, and launched "multiturn" ads in the US. These appear on follow-up questions once the conversation turns commercial, often the moment a shopper is closest to buying.

The day after its Q3 2026 results, Alphabet lost around half a trillion dollars in market value. Investors were worried that AI answers are leaving fewer places to show ads. Google's response is to put ads inside the AI answers themselves, so expect this to scale fast.

A Findrix study of 55,198 US AI Mode answers found 57% of product links pointed to Google Shopping, and 46.5% of product answers linked only to Google's own pages. Fashion and beauty were most affected, with swimwear and everyday womenswear topping the list. The study measures links shown, not clicks, but for D2C brands the message is clear: shoppers can browse, compare and shortlist your products without ever landing on your Shopify store.

That changes how you read your numbers. A dip in sessions doesn't always mean a dip in visibility, and strong Shopping performance today doesn't guarantee you'll appear in AI answers tomorrow.

Searches are getting longer

Google says AI Mode queries are around three times longer than traditional searches. Longer questions carry more intent, which is good news for brands whose product data and content answer them precisely.

Your product feed is now your shopfront in AI search. Products with vague titles, missing attributes or thin descriptions give Google less to match against detailed questions.

Reviews, clear pricing, delivery and returns information all help AI answers recommend you with confidence. And because you can't target AI Mode separately, the brands that win will be the ones whose existing campaigns and feeds are already in great shape.

What this means for B2B brands on Shopify

Trade buyers research in long, specific questions too: specs, compatibility, minimum order quantities, lead times. AI Mode suits that research, and multiturn ads can reach a buyer several questions deep.

If you sell B2B through Shopify using company profiles, catalogues and price lists, make sure the public-facing product data still carries the detail buyers search for, even where trade pricing sits behind a login.

Your Shopify checklist

  1. Feed: check your Google & YouTube app sync in Merchant Center for disapprovals, missing GTINs and weak titles.
  2. Attributes: use metafields to hold size, material, compatibility and use case, then make sure they reach your feed.
  3. Structured data: confirm your theme outputs product, price, availability and review markup correctly.
  4. Tracking: audit your Google tag and conversion setup so Smart Bidding has clean data before UK launch.
  5. Testing: trial broad match or AI Max against clear ROAS or CPA targets.
  6. Landing pages: make sure the pages ads land on answer detailed questions, not just list products.
